STAFFORDSHIRE POTTERY Big MUG TRANSFERWARE Shepherdess Goat Sheep Pastoral Rare

$ 25.87

Availability: 100 in stock

Description

I’ve been collecting English transferware for many years, and have never come across this design, and almost never a mug of this size. It’s really large, at just shy of about 4” tall and 5 1/2” wide with the handle. The mug itself without the handle is about 4” wide.
“The Shepherdess” by William Bouguereau dates to 1873, so it makes sense that the transfer would have become popular shortly after that, putting an estimated date in the mug around 1874 or shortly thereafter.
The transfer is a hand-painted image of a peasant girl holding a lamb with goat in a landscape setting. There is crazing, staining, the base has some hairlines, but there are no cracks or chips and it holds liquid without issue. Please see photos and ask any questions before bidding, this is sold in antique condition with age-related wear. No returns, thanks!
