"New Bedford Mass. Dec. 8" and Hopedale Mass. Dec. 9, 1887" circular datestamps, message is commercial asking for a "duplicate bill" since the original was lost.
Scott catalog value ,500 in italics, meaning it is based upon a sale of at least ten years ago.
In addition to this UNIQUE USED EXAMPLE, there are one unused and three mint examples known to exist.
As you can see from the scan, the unused (had a printed message and address but wasn't mailed) and sold for ,700 hammer, and one of the three mint examples (no printing and not mailed) sold for ,500 hammer. That is the basis for the current Scott catalog value of ,000. This sale was in January 2015.
