Description
This is an early wheel thrown stoneware "corker" jar from a Wisconsin potter ...C.HERMANN & CO MILWAUKEE
(stamped into the clay emb in oval on lower front)....You can see the potter's finger tip marks around base where he gripped the jar when dipping upside down into the slip......6 3/8"tall.....brown glaze inside and out.....wide mouth cork finish....Excellent condition with only a lip chip that has been expertly repaired; no other damage. Charles Hermann opened his pottery in Milwaukee in 1856. This jar was probably sold in the 1870s with mustard or food products inside and reused as a fruit jar.
