Description
For sale isa lonely cup made in France in the late 18th century . It used to be a pot de creme but is now missing its lid. These never had saucers. This type of cup was used for hot chocolate or meat juices (like a strong broth) to drink. The paste of this piece is really nice and white. It is hand painted with a really nice version of the blue corn flower decoration that so many makers used during this period. Nice flowers with their leaves as well as some single leaves and a nice leaf and red berries garland along the top and gold trim to the edge and handle. A pretty piece that I wish it had its lid or was marked. Alas neither is the case not much I can do about it. It is in good condition with just a minor touch of wear to the gilding, a black firing spot to the inside from when it was made and a hairline across the bottom terminal of the handle - a very common issue of these early cups! Blue cornflowers were a favorite of Marie Antoinette and thus became very popular during this time period. The piece is not marked underneath but is definitely French from this period! The cup is 2 inches tall and 2.375 inches in diameter.
