I personally hand make all my reproductions. Each one is carefully crafted from the finest materials. The Scrimshaw teeth and tusks will "age" over time when exposed to any light. So, after time, they look more and more "old".
They all have the nicks and scratches associated with the original teeth, some more than others. All have a money back guarantee.
Whaler Ship Lion
Maritime scrimshaw, a unique American art form, has its roots in the age of wooden ships. In the 18th Century, whaler sailing ships harvested whale and walrus blubber for lamp oil and candle wax. The sailors on whaling ships had a lot of spare time on board their ships. When not hunting and processing whales, mariners occupied free time etching and making small objects from whaling byproducts. Bones and teeth of sperm whales, baleen, and walrus tusks were readily available on board ship. These were a highly viable medium to produce hand tools, toys, utensils, and decorative pieces.
Sailors etched pictures and nautical scenes on bone, teeth, and tusks using using sail sewing needles and small tools. Candle black, soot or tobacco juice were used to bring the etched drawings into view. The earliest authenticated pictorial scrimshaw piece appeared around 1817.
Most original nautical scrimshaw pieces were anonymous. Many of these scrimshaw engravings were adapted from books and papers.
This historical tooth is a resin replica of a 19th Century American scrimshaw. This horizontally designed scrimshaw commemorates the Ship Whaler Lion. The front depicts a large urn, highly ornamental with fruits, leaves and ferns dated 1827. The back of the tooth shows a typical whaling scene, with a single-topsail ship bearing U.S. ensign and pennants. A second ship appears in the background. Two whaleboats are approaching with several sperm whales in the background.
You are bidding on a RESIN replica (NOT IVORY) sperm whale tooth Scrimshaw. THE SHIP "LION"
It is 1&1/2 WIDE and 4 inches long. measured on the curve. It s a neat conversation piece.
The details are excellent.
Bid with confidence. I fully guarantee everything that I sell. You must be satisfied or you can return it for credit.
(Buyer pays return postage)
IT DOES NOT VIOLATE ANY EBAY RULES OR US LAWS CONSERNING ENDANGERED SPECIES
.
We give our whole heart to provide
the best service. If there is
ANY
problem with your order
PLEASE CONTACT ME
.
I have a complete money back guarantee so there should be no need to
leave anything but the best ratings.
Keep in mind that the shipping time can vary due to weather or customs if you live in a country other than the
US
.
COMPARE MY PRICES WITH OTHERS AND YOU WILL SURELY SHOP MY STORE AGAIN.
THANKS FOR YOUR BUSINESS.
DAVE
BONEYARD FOSSIL REPRODUCTIONS
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
key words
Maritime, scrimshaw, sperm whale tooth, sperm whale teeth, whaling, tall ships, sailing ships, historical,New Bedford, whale teeth,
